Animal Liberation
The ideas behind the animal liberation movement are very simple. Animals should be free. They deserve the right to live their lives free from human domination. As you read this, thousands of animals are being killed in slaughterhouses all over New Zealand. Millions more suffer in factory farms and vivisection labs all over the country, all behind closed doors. Most people have been taught that animals are on this planet for us to exploit as we wish. For animals to be free we have to change these attitudes and live our lives in a way that treats animals, nature and other people with respect. Our goal is to reveal the atrocities inflicted on animals hidden from public view, to educate about how to minimize the suffering of animals by changing our lifestyles and to let those that are responsible for animal suffering know that it is not acceptable for them to exploit and profit from animal exploitation. Ultimately we want total liberation for every animal. AAA is an above ground animal rights group but we fully support people like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) that liberate animals from places of suffering such as slaughterhouses, vivisection laboratories and factory farms.
Auckland Animal Action
AAA was formed in August 1996. We saw the need for a grassroots activist group that promoted direct action against all forms of animal abuse. AAA encourages participation from everyone opposed to animal exploitation, regardless of age or experience. We are a democratic group and every active member has an equal say in decision making. All donations are spent on active campaigning. We do not spend money on wages, as AAA is an all volunteer group. There are many different ways to be involved with AAA, not everyone in AAA takes part in demonstrations, some people prefer to be involved by doing stalls, writing letters, doing design work or just by having a say. Point is there is always some way people can help in a way that they feel comfortable with.
Non-violent Direct Action
AAA was the first animal liberation group in NZ to start using civil disobedience (CD) in campaigning against animal suffering and abuse. CD is an effective tool for raising public awareness and placing pressure on abusive industries. Direct action and CD are strategies that have been used by every successful progressive movement against injustice, from the Suffragettes to Greenpeace. Around the country there is a growing movement of activists who are organizing CD and disruptive, effective protests against animal exploitation.
